Lately I have been hearing a lot of hype about this little grain called Quinoa (keen-wah). I thought that it was a new health craze, but it turns out quinoa is an ancient grain from Bolivia. Here are some of the health benefits of quinoa followed by some tasty recipes you can try for yourself at home.

Health Benefits of Quinoa

1. Quinoa is a complete protein.

Our bodies are only able to produce about half of the amino acids needed to maintain a healthy diet. The 9 that are not made in the body can be found in food sources and are called essential amino acids. Quinoa contains all nine of these amino acids which makes it a complete protein.

2. Quinoa is high in fiber

In fact, it contains almost twice as much fiber as most grains. Fiber is important in a healthy diet to promote digestion.

3. Quinoa is gluten free

With the prevalence of celiac disease increasing, the general public has a heightened awareness of gluten. Quinoa offers an option for those who suffer from celiac disease to enjoy gluten free versions of foods.

How to cook quinoa:

(4 servings)

  • 1 cup raw quinoa
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 2 1/2 cups water

Rinse raw quinoa before combing with water and salt. Bring the ingredients to a boil uncovered. Reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes or until water is absorbed.
